Grand Place Renovation Project Unveiled

Brussels has unveiled plans for a comprehensive yet sensitive renovation of the iconic Grand Place, the city’s UNESCO World Heritage central square.

Restoration Plans

The project will include:

  • Careful cleaning and restoration of historic guild house facades
  • Upgraded lighting to enhance nighttime viewing
  • Improved accessibility features throughout the square
  • Underground infrastructure upgrades with minimal surface disruption

Preserving Heritage

Experts from across Europe will collaborate on the restoration, using traditional techniques to preserve the square’s 17th-century character.

“The Grand Place is the heart of Brussels and one of Europe’s most beautiful squares,” said the city’s heritage director. “This restoration will ensure it remains magnificent for future generations.”

Visitor Experience

The square will remain open throughout the multi-year project, with work scheduled to minimize impact on the famous flower carpet event and Christmas market.

The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
